Phu Luang means “The Great Mountain” or “Mountain of the King”, it is formed by the uplift of the earth's surface and the soft part of the soil flowing down to the lower area. Phu Luang was declared as a wildlife sanctuary on December 18, 1974 with an area of approximately 560,593 rai. The general condition is a plateau and cool weather all year round, located in the area of Wang Saphung District, Phu Ruea District, Dan Sai District and Phu Luang District.
There are three seasons on Phu Luang, just like the plains, but with different temperature levels. Summer starts from February to April, and the average temperature is about 20-24 degrees Celsius, there will be flowers that are brightly colored and beautiful, such as the orchid's eyes glide, wild Orchids, White Roses and Red Roses. The best time to visit the fields of white roses and red roses is between February and March.
The rainy season is from May to October; the temperature is close to or slightly higher than summer. It will have small, purple-pink wildflowers scattered across the meadows. During winter, the temperatures drop considerably, averaging 0-16 degrees Celsius.
During the months of November to January, some days, the temperature drops to -4 degrees Celsius; and there will be "Guam Daeng", also known as the maple tree turns red, and then shed leaves on the ground. Also, there are silver button trees and the dragonfly-winged ladybug growing on the rock and on the floor of the evergreen forest
East of Phu Luang Mountain, the fossils of dinosaur footprints over 120 million years old have been discovered. There are also various forests such as deciduous or mixed forests, dry evergreen forests, evergreen forests, but the most prominent forests on Phu Luang are the two-leafed pine forests, and the plains of grasslands hills and stone terraces
In addition, the Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary has established a route to study the nature of Phu Luang which is the route that goes up Phu Ruea District starting from the hump of the Kraba Passing through Surian courtyard, Pha Somdet, and dinosaur footprints Along the way, you will find white roses, red roses and various wild orchids. The distance takes 1-2 days. Tourists who are interested in walking the nature study route must contact the navigation staff as well.
